Off to see Juliet's balcony in Verona
(Feb-2011)

Journal Entry... Shakespeare had made a landmark out of the town of Verona when he wrote his play, Romeo & Juliet. So did Verona recreate the star-crossed lovers' story, and a "Juliet's balcony", somewhere off Piazza della Erbe

25-feb: Day trip to Verona...
Two Peas in Verona
When hubby asked me where I wanted to be that last day in Milan, I said, "Verona, I want to see for real Juliet's balcony." Hubby bought train tickets, and we hopped on the train to Verona from Milan, and the short bus ride to the old town (where undercover ticket checkers would stop the bus midway to conduct surprise ticket inspection... so watch out!)
Armed with legit bus tickets, lol, romantics would not pass the chance to visit Verona to check on Juliet's house, and Juliet's balcony, and there, post love letters on the walls of Juliet's house addressed to: Juliet, Verona Italy. Despite the fiction to it all, you read it right... one could still be romantic over in Verona.

Was there really a Romeo and Juliet who lived in Verona? Well, it is said the town actually had two feuding families - the Montecchis and the Capellos, both sounding close to Shakepeare's fictional "Montagues" and "Capulets" families. Because Shakespeare had lived in Verona at one point in time, Verona's feuding Italian families may have inspired Shakespeare's plot in his play. Other than that, my dear romantics, it seems that is all there is to it. At Verona, lady visitors do end up sighing, "O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?" up Juliet's balcony for real from all that fictional story. On that note, let's be done with the Verona day trip... and head back to Milan, shall we?
