Main canal artery to the island of Murano
(Feb-2011) |
Journal Entry... I am not fond of glass items. Glass is breakable, so what's the use. It cuts the flesh, and can drip your blood dry. Then as a child and now adult, I never go near glass objects... Venice, I see, is also known for its artistically crafted glass, which is named after one of the minor islands where it is made.
15-feb: Vaporetto ride to Murano island...

Wishing on a Murano well |
A vaporetto (water bus) took us to Murano island, cutting the sea highway on the lagoon, marked by wooden stilts. No harm visiting the glass-making island being already in Venice. An eye-catching Murano horse (in glass as expected) in the store window had a tag that read, "Euro-26,000." WHOOPEE!!! I couldn't help but shake my head, after seeing the Murano horse's tag price. I don't see myself guarding that piece of prized glass for life most definitely. Purchasing the Murano glass work at its indicated price was problem enough for me. Photographing the Murano glass will do*wink;)

Anatomy of a Murano in glass |
All glass stores had put up a sign-- "If you break glass, you pay for the merchandise," in plain English, there was no room to feign ignorance to having gotten lost at translation.

Two Peas in Murano |
I stayed at arm's length careful not to bump any display stand, or other buyers who might point to me as the culprit to bumping the Murano glass display. Like water is to Venice, the Murano glass work was everywhere in Murano island in various interpretation to one's imagination. If you happen to be a collector, I promise, it'll be your grandest field trip ever. Freely enter a store/workshop to see a seasoned glass maker intently shaping another hot molten glass into a keeper Murano... for sale. If you can't afford to buy a pricey Murano glass from him, go tip the guy for his showmanship at the very least. What did I get for souvenir from Murano? Oh yes... Two small heart-shaped inexpensive glass pendants for keeps, one in yellow and the other green, for Euro-8.

What's for lunch? There's food in Murano, not just glass... |
