All Bets Are Off

Busy Senado in Macau
(Feb-2010)

Journal Entry... When your hotel in Hongkong is right next to the Hongkong ferry station, hopping on a ferry ride to no-VISA-required Macau is a no-brainer. All bets are off though, except to crave for some Portuguese inspired egg tart delicacy over in Macau.

2-feb: Ferry ride to Macau...

I'm not only your self-confessed acrophobic, I'm prone to seasickness out in the open sea-- downside of the Hongkong-Macau ferry ride. It was bad on the morning ride to Macau and worse on the evening ride to Hongkong. I remember pushing other passengers, apologetically, to storm out of the ferry and set foot on stable ground as soon as the ferry dropped anchor in Hongkong. Other than that, a day trip to Macau from Hongkong is possible. (Tip: In Macau, ride the Casino shuttles for free sightseeing. Thirsty? Why not grab a free bottle of water from the slot machine area of the hotel casino.) Okay, we learned these tricks from a "Kabayan" working his way around Macau as a part-time tour guide-- for a fee; guy has to earn a living. Because he was a "Kabayan", hubby and I accommodated him to give us a half-day tour.

Highlight casino hotel for tourists was Venezia Hotel for recreating those famous landmarks of Venice, such as Piazza San Marco and Doge's Palace, including the Rialto (bridge) and a Grand Canal complete with gondolas in chlorine-treated water... It surely made me want to travel to Italy to see the real deal. Before time ran out, I made a beeline over to busy Senado to find me some egg tarts. Nearby was the crowded St. Paul's ruins calling for photo-op.
