Berchtesgaden at the Border

Konigssee in Germany's border at Berchtesgaden
(Feb-2013)

Journal Entry... Thinking a Jurassic Park was out there in Berchtesgaden got my ears all perked up, like a puppy. Why not? Konigssee is the third deepest lake out of a Jurassic rift, formed out of glaciers during the last ice age.

12-feb: Day trip to Berchtesgaden... I woke up late on that scheduled day trip to Germany's Berchtesgaden at the border, from Salzburg. Because the hubby and I only had a day trip to Berchtesgaden, I know it was crucial that we get there while there's still natural light outdoors; in winter, days are shorter and nights longer.  Hubby was muttering about it.

Bus ride to Salzburg train station, from Linzergasse apartment, became confusing as to where the bus stop is. Not to waste time, I convinced the hubby that we just walk to Salzburg train station; it took us thirty minutes to get there. At the station, hubby said, there should be a direct bus ride to Berchtesgaden, from Salzburg. Hubby asked the Ticketing Office where to get the bus tickets to Berchtesgaden, and was told that taking the train was more convenient and easier than the bus, and hubby bought the train tickets to Berchtesgaden.

As it turned out, train ride to Berchtesgaden, from Salzburg, had to connect via Freilassing, as compared to the single bus ride to Berchtesgaden, from Salzburg, that could have been also a combo bus ticket for an unlimited bus ride around Berchtesgaden, thus saving us extra Euro for the pocket. Hubby muttered he should not have listened from a person selling train tickets, when one is buying bus tickets.
Moral of the story: Wake up early, huh?!

What can one expect in Berchtesgaden, situated in Germany's Bavaria region, in winter? Answer: Freakin' heaps of snow!!! It became clear hubby and I cannot remain outdoors too long even if we wanted to, as nightfall was creeping in, fast... Made it down to Konigssee, by 4:45PM, no thanks to the bus schedule around Berchtesgaden. I wanted to go on a boat cruise to St. Bartholoma, sadly, the boat was nowhere in sight, either because the boat cruise was over, or there was no boat cruise at all, with the lake all frozen up. What to do? Photo-op!

The most important thing is that hubby had made it inside the Dokumentation Obersalzburg (museum), and the preserved underground tunnel from the last world war, before museum closing time; otherwise, I would not really hear the end to hubby's muttering for the day that all started from when I woke up late. Nearby Eagle's Nest, a fave spot of him-who-must-not-be-named, and a must-visit when in Berchtesgaden, was closed in winter.

Day turned to night, finally, it was time to head back to Salzburg across the border. I have (just about) had it with too much snow for the day, as well. But, for the nth time, the local bus took so long to arrive... The McDonald's across the bus stop was tempting me with a cheeseburger-and-fries meal, but all I could do was imagine munching on it. Hubby and I could not leave the bus stop fearing we'd miss out on what could be the last bus ride to Berchtesgaden train station.
