Romantic Road to Fussen

On a mountain trail to Neuschwanstein Castle in Schwangau
(Feb-2013)

Journal Entry... When in the Romantic Road on a first visit to Germany, and after having chosen two of the best stops... Hubby and I made our way to pit stop in the 350-km roadway of old world charm, by train.

14-feb: Romantic Road to Fussen...
Two Peas in Fussen
While Rothenburg odT was doable from Frankfurt, the pit stop at Fussen was doable from Munich... both by train. A train ride from Munich to Fussen, and adding up a bus ride to Schwangau, hubby and I arrived to the foot of the mountain, looking up to the pit stop attraction: Neuschwanstein CastleWhat opportune day to be at the pit stop than on Valentine's Day (February 14). Roadside view of the castle high up in the alps was love at first sight. Love was definitely in the air, sending a winter breeze all over Fussen.

On a romantic carriage ride
on Hearts Day
Hubby and I had a choice between hiking the Schwangau mountain trail and riding a horse-drawn carriage to the castle, to catch the 2:25PM guided castle tour (in English). Lining up for a carriage ride was not a problem; only, the horse-drawn carriage was traveling at such amazingly slow speed up and down the mountain trail, causing a line to build up at the foot of the mountain. I think, there were only two horse-drawn carriages doing the mountain trail, because the road was narrow it could fit one carriage at a time alongside visitors opting to hike the mountain trail. Uphill walk takes about forty minutes, one-way. I told the hubby about an Amazing Race episode, where teams raced up to the castle, also in winter time... the teams who went on foot ended bickering at one another and blaming the other for not riding the horse-drawn carriage. It is Heart's Day, after all, a horse-drawn carriage ride up the castle is the ROMANTIC way to go. That said, I purchased tickets for two to the horse-drawn carriage ride, up Neuschwanstein Castle.

It was dark by the time we got back to the Fussen train station for the train ride to Munich... thanks to the Schwangau horses galloping down the mountain trail at a leisurely pace.
